Inspirational quote over a sunrise background that reads, “God can bless ME by whatever method He chooses! Remember: Spit and dirt!” — a reminder that God can perform miracles in unexpected ways.

Miracles From Some Spit, Dirt and a Bit of Water.

Have you ever wondered how God could possibly answer your prayers when every logical option seems impossible? In a powerful message from Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, I was reminded that the Lord can use whatever method He chooses—even something as simple as spit, dirt, and a bit of water—to perform miracles. This story changed how I see faith, logic, and divine answers forever.

Jeffrey R. Holland has been my "favorite" member of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles since before I was a young missionary back in 90's. Yep, I was born in the 1900's. 😁

I love his passion and effusive communication style. So many others communicate in a calm and measured way, but not Elder Holland! He speaks with FIRE! Fervor! I can always feel his message in my soul!

Over the ensuing years he has become more reserved, but his testimony and commitment have deepened, rather than diminished.

I am a logical thinker. Logic sometimes becomes a stumbling block for me when considering answers to my earnest prayers and needs from God. Why? My logical mind considers how a prayer can be answered; what makes sense to me. I tend to see the logical means as the ONLY means that can be used to answer my prayer. And if logical means make little sense, seem impossible or unlikely it follows that I fear or doubt. I forget sometimes who my Father is.

Maybe you, like me, feel prompted and guided by God to do and accomplish more than what your current circumstances or budget will allow.

Do you ever become discouraged because the logical options seem unlikely and impossible? I know I do. I trust that God sees things that I do not and cannot see. So, I move forward with faith. I pray and watch and seek answers. I work hard.

    And yet...

I still cannot see HOW God can or will answer some of my deepest needs and concerns.

    Enter spit and dirt.

In the Sunday Morning Session of the October 2025 General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints, Elder Holland recounted the New Testament story of the blind man whose eyes were anointed by the Savior. After bathing in the Pool of Siloam, the blind man could see (The Holy Bible, John 9, 1-11)!

I've heard and read that story many times before today, but today something different happened.

I heard the declaration: "God can bless us by whatever method He chooses" emphasis added.

Those words entered my heart in a POWERFUL and immediate way. I began to nearly hyperventilate as I felt the Holy Ghost speak to my logical mind and doubtful, yet hopeful heart.

I heard the Holy Ghost speak to my mind come with force: "Do you hear me? Whatever method He chooses."

It took some time to regain my breathing and compose myself. I immediately printed up a sign to hang on the wall across from my bed.

Spit and dirt. A bit of water. These are by NO MEANS the logical means to heal blindness. Not even modern medicine would recommend bacteria-laden spit and dirt or washing in a pond filled with who knows what type of parasites to heal anything. Modern medicine is all about sterile environments and minimizing infection.

But the Savior, used these simple means to perform a miracle.

What does that mean to me? That God does NOT need to use logical means to answer prayers and perform miracles.

He can use 'whatever method He chooses.'

My logical mind can only see what it can see. But God is not limited by what mortals can see or perceive.

I still have no idea how my prayers or needs will be answered. There are things in my life that seem unlikely or even impossible. No doubt you have needs and challenges in your life that you feel the same way about.

Let's remind ourselves of the miracles that Jesus can do with simple, albeit illogical, things.

Simple things in the hand of the Savior, can be made miraculous!
